Using Mongo in a micro-service environment is even better because your models can be smaller, meaning less burden on relationships, although you do compensate with a bit of duplication, but a well-designed schema will have minimal impact on that. Sadly it is just seen as a MySQL clone, but it offers more than that (although its documentation could be improved). MariaDB has it readily available, and also has many improvements over MySQL and Postgres, especially for NoSQL features and scalability. There's even a third, albeit a little more "manual" implementation here, the graph relationship in which you can model data, in which you can easily model event-driven documents, like a Purchase that goes from "a customer" to "a store", which you can later use for much easier and deep analytics than with the classical SQL stance. Like using references to relate a User to a Profile, and an embed to relate a Product to an Order. You have two de facto ways to connect data, by reference and embedding, which in Ecommerce, both have big uses. But then, I have the same user in the Profile service, with the same id, but totally different fields. For instance, I've got a User service that has all auth related information of a user. What you need to see is to model your data in a way that makes sense with Mongo. Whatever Postgres offers, Mongo does it a little easier and better, like text search and geo-queries. Not just because of it being NoSQL, but because all of the support I find in the NodeJS community through packages and utilities that make it dead easy to use it for several use-cases. Now-a-days, I really found my solution in Mongo. One of the main challenges with analyzing a NoSQL database being familiar in the SQL ways, is that it's easy to look for "analogies" for what makes SQL useful, like relationship enforcing, transactions and the cascading effect on deletes, updates and inserts, and that limit your vision a lot when analyzing a tool like Mongo, especially in a micro-services pattern. However, frankly, I didn't want to model statically all data, since I have several distinct schemas (like for different product types) and I wanted some flexibility to add or remove as I saw fit. See moreĪ few months ago, I had decided to use Postgres because since its version 9 it showed a lot of progress for being a high-availability database. It feels like you have most experience with SQL/RDBMS technologies, so for the simplest learning curve, and if your application fits it, then I'd personally start by looking at AWS Aurora. RDBMS/SQL stores are great for having as many indexes as you want, other than the slow-down in write speed, whereas databases like Amazon DynamoDB provide blisteringly fast read/write performance, but are very limited on key indexing capabilities. MongoDB, with its document-store type solution is a very different model to key-value-pair stores (like AWS DynamoDB), or column stores (like AWS RedShift) or for more complex data relationships, Entity Graph Stores (like AWS Neptune), to stores designed for tokenisation and text search (ElasticSearch) etc.Īlso critical in all this is how many items you believe you need to index by. however please don't fall into the trap of considering 'NoSQL' as being single category. Your question regards 'Relational or not' is obviously key, and you need to consider both your required data structure, as well as the ACID requirements of your application model, as well as the non-functional requirements in terms of scalability, resilience, whether you want security authorisation at the highest application tier, or right down to 'row' level in the database, etc. Particularly if you are planning to host in either AWS or Azure, then your first point of call should be the PaaS (Platform as a Service) databases supplied by these vendors, as you will find yourself requiring a lot less effort to support them, much easier Disaster Recovery options, and also, depending on how PAYG the database is that you use, potentially also much cheaper costs than having a dedicated database server. The most important question is where are you planning to host? On-premise, or in the cloud.

This book, usually now called De Aetna, was a short 60-page text about a journey to Mount Etna, written by the young Italian humanist poet Pietro Bembo, who would later become a Cardinal, secretary to Pope Leo X and lover of Lucrezia Borgia. His first printing in the Latin alphabet, in February 1496 (1495 by the Venetian calendar), was a book entitled Petri Bembi de Aetna Angelum Chabrielem liber. Manutius at first printed works only in Greek. These were used as a master to stamp matrices, the moulds used to cast metal type. Griffo, sometimes called Francesco da Bologna (of Bologna), was an engraver who created designs by cutting punches in steel. The regular (roman) style of Bembo is based on Griffo's typeface for Manutius. This section is engraved as a simulation of Tagliente's handwriting other parts were set in a typeface of similar design. Giovanni Antonio Tagliente's 1524 writing manual, which inspired Bembo's italic. Bembo has been released in versions for phototypesetting and in several revivals as digital fonts by Monotype and other companies. Prominent users of Bembo have included Penguin Books, the Everyman's Library series, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, the National Gallery, Yale University Press and Edward Tufte. Since its creation, Bembo has enjoyed continuing popularity as an attractive, legible book typeface. Monotype also created a second, much more eccentric italic for it to the design of calligrapher Alfred Fairbank, which also did not receive the same attention as the normal version of Bembo. It followed a previous more faithful revival of Manutius's work, Poliphilus, whose reputation it largely eclipsed. Monotype created Bembo during a period of renewed interest in the printing of the Italian Renaissance, under the influence of Monotype executive and printing historian Stanley Morison. The italic is based on work by Giovanni Antonio Tagliente, a calligrapher who worked as a printer in the 1520s, after the time of Manutius and Griffo. Bembo is named for Manutius's first publication with it, a small 1496 book by the poet and cleric Pietro Bembo. It is a member of the " old-style" of serif fonts, with its regular or roman style based on a design cut around 1495 by Francesco Griffo for Venetian printer Aldus Manutius, sometimes generically called the "Aldine roman". Bembo is a serif typeface created by the British branch of the Monotype Corporation in 1928–1929 and most commonly used for body text. The Thunderbird was designed by car designer Raymond Dietrich in 1963, and the base version, the Thunderbird, was also designed by Dietrich and released at the same time. The aching loveliness of Die zwei blauen Augen has seldom been so feelingly caught, those dragging rhythms so well judged. Indeed, elegance is a good description of Woods’ approach to these songs he coaxes glorious sounds from his players and, thanks to a good recording and quiet audience, every nudge and nuance is easily heard. Newcomers to this arrangement will be pleased to hear that it’s anything but desiccated, Ich hab’ ein glühend Messer, a fine example of late-Romantic blush contained in a score of remarkable economy and elegance. The real pleasure resides in Schoenberg’s masterly arrangement, which preserves the mood and manner of Mahler’s originals while condensing his sound-world to its bare, ear-pricking essentials. The pizzicati in that Mahlerian ur-tune Ging heut’ morgen übers Feld are a joy to hear, although it’s Stout’s subtle, feeling response to this song that really catches the ear and gladdens the heart. The overall sound is wonderfully aerated, perfect for music that’s so artfully distilled, the lower strings especially rich and vibrant. Diction is good, and the balance between orchestra and soloist seems just right. The soloists on the SOMM recording are all unfamiliar, but seconds into the first of the Wayfarer songs – Wenn mein Schatz hochzeit macht – I was more than contented with David Stout’s steady, characterful baritone. The latter performance, from a conductor I don’t usually warm to, is rather splendid, helped in no small measure by a reach-out-and-touch recording and the presence of a near-ideal tenor, Hans Peter Blochwitz. There are several recordings of the Schoenberg-Riehn score, Osmo Vänskä (BIS), Kent Nagano (Sony) and Philippe Herreweghe (Harmonia Mundi) among them. Among his Mahler arrangements are the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen – written for a concert in 1920 – and Das Lied von der Erde which, apart from the first song, had to be fleshed out by the conductor Rainer Riehn in 1983. Little wonder that Schoenberg felt the need for such a group which, although it folded in 1921, had a substantial worklist and held regular concerts. One only has to read contemporary accounts of the premiere of Schoenberg’s Second String Quartet in 1908 and see the caricatures published in Die Zeit to be reminded of just how toxic the Austrian capital was for Mahler, Schoenberg and their forward-thinking allies. To promote and present the work of modern composers to sympathetic Schoenberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances (Vereinįür musikalische Privataufführungen) set up in Vienna in 1918 It seemed a good idea to tackle the two Schoenberg arrangementsĪs played by this curiously-titled orchestra and their principal Lied von der Erde from Houston (Naxos 8.572498) Starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw, the series received multiple Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Award nominations in 2019, earning a Golden Globe win for Whishaw.Having just reviewed a fine performance of the original Das Treadwell-Collins most recently produced A Very English Scandal series for the BBC and Amazon, written by Russell T Davies and directed by Stephen Frears. “What an amazing and exciting opportunity for an author to revisit his characters once again, and to continue the journey and to be blessed on such an enterprise with the innovative and creative calibre of Dominic Treadwell-Collins and the team at Happy Prince and Marc Helwig of Miramax.” Blethyn was nominated for an Academy Award for the role and Caine won the Golden Globe for his performance. In this way the action potential is transmitted along the axon, toward the terminal buttons. As each new segment becomes positive, the membrane in the prior segment closes up again, and the segment returns to its negative resting potential. When the action potential occurs in the first segment of the axon, it quickly creates a similar change in the next segment, which then stimulates the next segment, and so forth as the positive electrical impulse continues all the way down to the end of the axon. The electrical charge moves down the axon from segment to segment, in a set of small jumps, moving from node to node. Once the action potential occurs, the number of positive ions exceeds the number of negative ions in this segment, and the segment temporarily becomes positively charged.Īs you can see in Figure 4.3, “The Myelin Sheath and the Nodes of Ranvier,” the axon is segmented by a series of breaks between the sausage-like segments of the myelin sheath. This change in electrical charge that occurs in a neuron when a nerve impulse is transmitted is known as the action potential. When the segment of the axon that is closest to the cell body is stimulated by an electrical signal from the dendrites, and if this electrical signal is strong enough that it passes a certain level or threshold, the cell membrane in this first segment opens its gates, allowing positively charged sodium ions that were previously kept out to enter. Normally, the axon remains in the resting potential, a state in which the interior of the neuron contains a greater number of negatively charged ions than does the area outside the cell. The electrical signal moves through the neuron as a result of changes in the electrical charge of the axon. The Electrochemical Action of the Neuron : The following video clip shows a model of the electrochemical action of the neuron and neurotransmitters: If the signal reaches the terminal buttons, they are signalled to emit chemicals known as neurotransmitters, which communicate with other neurons across the spaces between the cells, known as synapses. Within the neuron, when a signal is received by the dendrites, it is transmitted to the soma in the form of an electrical signal, and, if the signal is strong enough, it may then be passed on to the axon and then to the terminal buttons. An electrical charge moves through the neuron itself, and chemicals are used to transmit information between neurons. The nervous system operates using an electrochemical process. Neurons Communicate Using Electricity and Chemicals Axons branch out toward their ends, and at the tip of each branch is a terminal button. The myelin sheath is a layer of fatty tissue surrounding the axon of a neuron that both acts as an insulator and allows faster transmission of the electrical signal. To improve the speed of their communication, and to keep their electrical charges from shorting out with other neurons, axons are often surrounded by a myelin sheath. The axons are also specialized, and some, such as those that send messages from the spinal cord to the muscles in the hands or feet, may be very long - even up to several feet in length. Some neurons have hundreds or even thousands of dendrites, and these dendrites may themselves be branched to allow the cell to receive information from thousands of other cells. This vast interconnected web is responsible for all human thinking, feeling, and behaviour. Figure 4.1 Components of the Neuron.įigure 4.2 The nervous system, including the brain, is made up of billions of interlinked neurons. Figure 4.2 shows a photograph of neurons taken using confocal microscopy. As you can see in Figure 4.1, “Components of the Neuron,” neurons are made up of three major parts: a cell body, or soma, which contains the nucleus of the cell and keeps the cell alive a branching treelike fibre known as the dendrite, which collects information from other cells and sends the information to the soma and a long, segmented fibre known as the axon, which transmits information away from the cell body toward other neurons or to the muscles and glands. A neuron is a cell in the nervous system whose function it is to receive and transmit information. The nervous system is composed of more than 100 billion cells known as neurons.
